Granted, Bangladesh perform terribly away from home unless it’s against Zimbabwe or the West Indies, but their performance in New Zealand is always among their worst - no matter how well the same team is doing at home or elsewhere. The first match of their ongoing ODI series was emblematic of this, with the visitors getting absolutely routed by the home side. With the second match coming tomorrow, things look as grim as ever, but as we always say, this is cricket after all. Bangladesh will be looking to even things out, while New Zealand will be not just wanting but expecting to waltz to a series victory. Before the sun rises on Christchurch on the day in question, let’s take a look at the two sides.

New Zealand

Predicted XI for 2nd ODI vs Bangladesh

Tom Latham (c/wk), Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, James Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Will Young.

Preview and form

Hosting Bangladesh was a cakewalk as usual for the Kiwis, and they were able to get a resounding victory even with 3 uncapped players on the team. Bowling first, Trent Boult starred with four wickets while James Neesham and Mitchell Santner chipped in with two to chain the visitors down for a pathetic total. On the chase, Martin Guptill’s ballistic 39, Henry Nicholls’ unfortunate 49* (thanks to the bizarrely selfish actions of debutant Will Young), and Devon Conway’s 27 were enough to get the team to an utterly easy victory.

New Zealand key players for 2nd ODI vs Bangladesh

Martin Guptill: The aggressive Kiwi is always keen to get a big score on the board.

Will Young: The debutant didn’t get the chance to do much in his first match, but maybe his second will be different.

Trent Boult: Incisive, accurate, and quick, Boult is often the prime danger for visiting teams.

Kyle Jamieson: Although he didn’t pick up any wickets in the first match, Jamieson is a potent threat.

Bangladesh

Predicted XI for 2nd ODI vs New Zealand

Tamim Iqbal (c), Mohammad Mithun, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Liton Das, Mahmudullah Riyadh, Mahedi Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rubel Hossain.

Preview and form

At some point, one must wonder why Bangladesh don’t seem to learn from their repeated failures down under. Every time they go to the region for a bilateral series, they invariably lose every match they play. Batting first, Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and with the highest scorers being Mahmudullah Riyadh with 27 and Mushfiqur Rahim with 23, it’s no surprise that the visitors crumbled for a measly 131 after playing for 41.5 overs. Despite decent bowling by some of them, and a wicket each from Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, the target was never going to be enough. The home side chased the target down in just 21.2 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

Bangladesh key players for 2nd ODI vs New Zealand

Tamim Iqbal: As the captain and the senior-most batsman in the team, Tamim must play an innings worthy of such a player.

Mahmudullah Riyadh: One of the team’s most important players, Mahmudullah needs to step up just like the others.

Taskin Ahmed: After showing some promise in the last match, Taskin must do his best to justify his selection.

Mustafizur Rahman: The now-seasoned quick has many a trick in his book, and needs to use them well.

New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2nd ODI pitch report and weather conditions

The Hagley Oval pitch is great for fast bowlers - offering plenty of early movement and bounce - but it is also good to bat on as the ball comes on to the bat nicely. Spinners on the other hand won’t get much help. Expect the team winning the toss to want to bat first, and look to put up 280+.

Other than being a little cold for the Bangladeshi players, Christchurch should offer great weather for cricket. A nice breeze, virtually no precipitation to speak of, and some humidity to keep things balanced.

Can New Zealand close out this series as they have many times before? Or will the Bangladeshis come up with something out of their usual box? Find out if our New Zealand versus Bangladesh predictions come true on Tuesday!
