IPL 2024 Match Predictions: Unlocking The Best Betting Strategies

Since the Twenty20 Cup began in England in 2003, domestic T20 tournaments have popped up around the world. The ‘domestic’ part is usually by name only, as millions of viewers tune in to these high-octane competitive games fueled by rivalries either preexisting and regional, or created by the matches in the tournament. Amid all this interest in the format, these tournaments have grown in size, scale, and scope and are now some of the most eagerly followed in the world. Whether it’s New Zealand’s scintillating Super Smash, the Pakistan’s passionate Super League, the Australia’s boisterous Big Bash League, or the India’s incendiary Premier League, passions run high - and so do the stakes!

Of the many domestic T20 cricket franchises, the proverbial ‘holy grail’ would be the Indian Premier League or IPL. Created in 2008, IPL draws in the most viewers of any franchise by a considerable margin. Although political issues have seen Pakistani players banned from the tournaments since its 2011 iteration, the league has nevertheless thrived because of audience fervour and sheer panache. With the fame and game comes the betting, and the IPL sees thousands of bets laid on various aspects of its games every year. Given cricket’s countless variables, there are numerous markets for aspiring bettors to take advantage of. If you’re interested in the tournament and its betting potential, we’re here to give you a comprehensive look into the next iteration of IPL along with some solid IPL 2021 Match Predictions to help you make the best out of your buck!

“IPL 2021

First and foremost, remember that when it comes to betting, knowledge is power. As such, you should have a solid idea of not only cricket as a sport, but also the teams involved in the IPL including their lineups. Here they are in all their glory:

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super KingsComing up first in terms of both alphabetical order and consistency are the Chennai Super Kings. Since the inaugural season of the IPL, the team has never failed to reach the playoffs - apart from the two seasons for which it was suspended alongside Rajasthan Royals after their owners were found to be dabbling in betting (something owners of a franchise are, naturally, strictly not allowed to do). The only other negative thing that can be said about them is that they have lost 5 of the 8 IPL finals they played, which kind of reflects badly on their otherwise fantastic record. Nevertheless, CSK is always a force to be reckoned with, reaching the finals again last year despite some of their players now being well past their prime.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi CapitalsFormerly known as the Delhi Daredevils, the team from India’s capital remains the only one of the original 8 IPL teams to never have even played a final. This is especially disappointing as they seem to do well during the auctions, and boasted the likes of Virender Sehwag and David Warner among other superstars over the years, but their players somehow never manage to live up to expectations. Nevertheless, since changing their name in December 2018, they made their way into the playoffs for the first time since 2012, and it is likely that they will do well in the upcoming iteration of IPL as well.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)

Kings XI PunjabAnother team that perpetually subverts expectations, Kings XI only ever played the playoff final once, losing out to KKR in a match that looked to be theirs when they racked up a sizable 199. They have only entered the playoffs one other time - in the very first IPL when they got third place. This is another team that has housed some powerhouse players only to fall short, but at least in this case one could cite some questionable bidding decisions, an example of which is the 62 million rupees they spent on Sri Lankan spinner Gowtham Krishnappa. They are, as is mostly usual, at the bottom of the odds list for most betting sites, but as cricket is a highly uncertain game, that could also prove to be deceptive. In any case, they did get a couple of absolute bargains this year, bolstering an already decent lineup, and it would be a mistake to rule them out of the running entirely.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Kolkata Knight RidersHighly inconsistent even in their heyday (between their two tournament-winning years of 2012 and 2014, they placed 7th in 2013), Kolkata seem to have settled into a decent-but-not-the-best routine since the 2015 edition, looking strong at times but fizzling out when the stakes are highest. This is especially disappointing because charismatic team owner Shahrukh Khan - a global superstar - usually ensures plenty of big names for the side. One of the highest spenders in the IPL, Kolkata will want to reap the rewards of their efforts soon - preferably in this very edition.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai IndiansLast year’s champions and the winner of four editions of IPL - the most by any team, the team from India’s biggest city is inarguably this year’s strongest contender. Although they went without a title for the first 5 IPL seasons, the side has won every alternate iteration of the tournament since 2013. Unlike CSK, they have only lost one final (2010), which says a lot about their mettle. However, in between their winning years, their performances were pretty average, so one wouldn’t exactly be called superstitious to not fancy Mumbai’s chances this year. However, the Rohit Sharma-led side will no doubt be trying to break that weird jinx - especially after having retained as many as 18 players from last year’s team.

MI Players to watch out for: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Rajasthan RoyalsRunning contrary to the proverb ‘morning shows the day’, the story of Rajasthan is a tragic one. Since winning the first edition of the IPL with an underdog squad led by Aussie legend Shane Warne, the team fell into a slump, placing near the bottom of the table for four years. Despite a solid title attempt in 2013 that ended in a bronze placement, the side hasn’t been able to equal even that record in the years since. Their plight was made worse when they were banned alongside CSK in 2016 and 2017, and unlike the Chennai side, they haven’t been able to bounce back strongly. Lacking much local firepower, the team is heavily reliant on international stars, which might lead to its downfall if and when international matches overlap. The only positive is that they are unquestionably hungry for good results.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Royal Challengers BangaloreIt’s a classic case of always the bridesmaid, never the bride for Indian captain Virat Kohli’s side. Despite Kohli being the highest run scorer in IPL history, and RCB reaching IPL finals 3 times, the side has failed to eke out a single title. This is especially frustrating for the South India side as they are absurdly overshadowed by 3-time champion regional neighbours CSK. Boasting some of the biggest names in cricket in their roster over the years, including the explosive Chris Gayle, bombastic AB de Villiers, Mr Consistent Virat Kohli, and spin maestro Yuzvendra Chahal, it really is a disappointment that a side full of such quality has never lifted the IPL trophy. Surely if anyone deserves the title, it’s the all-time top scorer. Needless to say, they will be out for blood this season.

RCB Players to watch out for: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Aaron Finch, Kane Richardson, Yuzvendra Chahal, Moeen Ali.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Sunrisers HyderabadThe only team currently playing in the IPL to not have begun its journey with the other 7, Sunrisers Hyderabad came into existence after its regional predecessor Deccan Chargers was dissolved in 2012. In its 7 years of operation, it has established itself as a potent force in the IPL, reaching 2 finals and even winning one of them. For a tournament that has 3 teams playing for 12 years without a trophy, that is quite an impressive feat - especially when you consider the fact that the four other teams that began their journey post-first season were all dissolved within one to three years. After a disappointing fourth-place finish last season, the Sunrisers will be intent upon coming up better in this one - and they have the lineup to pull it off.

Who will win IPL 2021: Indian Premier League Winner Odds

Now that you know the lineups, let’s talk about the betting. The first and potentially most profitable bet, of course, is on the outright winner of the tournament. Mumbai Indians are currently considered the favourites, after winning 4 of their last 7 campaigns. However, as previously mentioned, they had middling performances in between those wins, and this is their so-called ‘odd’ year. The Sunrisers are next in line, followed by the ever-consistent CSK. Every other team is quite some way off, with RCB and DC coming next, followed by two-time champion KKR and first edition winner Rajasthan Royals, with Punjab bringing up the rear. All that being said, cricket is a highly uncertain game, and using multiple sportsbooks to keep some contingency is always a good idea.

Bet for each game

Next up comes the predictions for each game. T20 is by far the most unstable, unpredictable format in cricket, so bet safely and be ready for freak results. As the tournament moves along, make sure you keep an eye on a variety of factors when you bet, such as weather, pitch conditions, coin toss, home advantage, and stage of the tournament and the teams involved in the match.

For instance, rain before the match could result in a slow outfield or a pitch with low bounce. At the same time, dewy conditions in the evening can cause bowlers to be unable to grip the ball properly. Weather conditions as well as the state of the pitch can make the outcome of the coin toss vital. At the same time, home advantage is a very real thing, as having the crowd behind you can be a double-edged sword. As for the stage of the tournament, for example, if a team that is used to doing well and falls behind with a few early losses, you can rest assured that they will fight tooth and nail to get back in the groove. On the flip side, a team which is used to doing poorly might accept their fate and let things slip further. Playoff qualifications also play a role, as a team that’s in contention and fighting to get into the second round will naturally be hell bent on winning.

Note: As this edition of IPL is due to take place outside India, in the UAE, home advantage hardly counts because all the teams participating will use neutral ground.

Here's the schedule for IPL 2021 edition:

Utilizing the many variables

Make sure to make the best of the sheer number of factors in cricket. There are countless betting markets, from how many runs a team will score, to players’ individual performances such as scoring a 50 or a 100, how many wickets a bowler will take, how much a team will score up to a certain point in the game, etc. When betting on these, pay close attention to player and team histories for the best educated guesses.

Final words

Betting is, goes without saying, a tricky art to master. As always, we recommend responsible betting. Our goal is to make sure you make the most out of your passion, and cricket is quite the passion to have - with the IPL being one of the most anticipated events in the minds of cricket fans.
