While a lot more forgiving than knockouts or other bracket systems, a league format only gives a team a certain amount of leeway before the chance of attaining a certain position is robbed from them forever. Former giants Perth Scorchers, who had their first win on Thursday, will be in hot competition against Melbourne Renegades for one of the five spots that will let them through to the second round, with the chances of reaching that diminishing fast for both teams. There are precious few differences between the two teams in terms of how they’ve played this season, with the biggest being that Perth got their first win after 3 losses and a No Result, while the Renegades won their first match only to lose 5 on the trot since. The only silver lining for MR is that that solitary win came against the very team they are about to face. Before the two sides begin their clash, let’s take a look at them.

Perth Scorchers predicted XI, preview, form, and key players for this match

Predicted XI: Ashton Turner (c), Mitchell Marsh, Jason Roy, Jason Behrendorff, Fawad Ahmed, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis (wk), Liam Livingstone, Colin Munro, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye.

After the relief they must have felt following their maiden triumph, the Scorchers will be eager to hit the field to rack up more wins. In their last match, their bowlers started solid and chipped away at the Adelaide Strikers batting lineup despite a defiant knock by the AS captain. Jhye Richardson took 3 for 19 and Aaron Hardie chipped in with 2 for 21 to limit their opponents to a modest 146. PS also had a couple of low-scoring top-order batsmen, but Jason Roy’s 49 off 32, Josh Inglis’ 44 from 31, and Mitchell Marsh’s 38 off 24 saw them through with 2.2 overs and 7 wickets in hand.

PS Key players

  • Jason Roy: As we had predicted, the inclusion and coming to form of Jason Roy had the much-needed desired effect on the Scorchers. We believe he’ll be great in the next game, too.

  • Josh Inglis: Having finally found form after a string of poor outings, Inglis can be dangerous if allowed to find his footing.

  • Mitchell Marsh: Potent with both bat and ball, Marsh will be an important cog in the Scorchers’ machine, which is only just beginning to shake off the rust.

  • Jhye Richardson: This terrific youngster has performed superbly in almost every match, and he will be important in culling the Renegades’ ambitions.

Melbourne Renegades predicted XI, preview, form, and key players for this match

Predicted XI: Aaron Finch (c), Mackenzie Harvey, Shaun Marsh, Sam Harper (wk), Josh Lalor, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Mohammad Nabi, Rilee Rossouw, Imad Wasim, Peter Hatzoglou.

It’s depressing to think of if you’re a Renegades fan, but the side has won only 4 matches since it won the title in 2018/19 while losing an awful 16, which is the most of any team in that same time period. In their last match, they put up quite possibly their best fight yet. Marsh’s brilliant 87 off 48 and Nabi’s supporting 33 off 24 helped them rush to 166 off just 17 overs in a reduced match. Things weren’t going as well with the ball, with everyone other than Richardson, Sutherland, and Hatzoglou being extremely expensive, but shortly after MR got two important breakthroughs, the elements interfered again - and this time there would be no more cricket. Thunder had kept themselves ahead of the DLS calculations, and they managed to win by 7 runs using said method.

MR Key players

  • Shaun Marsh: With both Marsh brothers in form and on the field, it’ll be a test of which one can outshine the other.

  • Rilee Rossouw: It’s been a relatively quiet tournament for Rossouw, but if he can find a little more form, he can go ballistic.

  • Mohammad Nabi: Speaking of going ballistic, Nabi may have played a supporting role as the time called for it last game, but he’s no stranger to hitting them huge - or picking up a few important wickets, for that matter.

  • Peter Hatzoglou: The newbie leggie continues to charm with both his wicket-taking abilities and his economy rate.

PS vs MR weather and pitch conditions

Although there’s no rain predicted, the air will be dry and the sky cloudy. While these conditions are great, the 32 km/h winds predicted may affect high balls.

Perth Stadium is an excellent ground for batsmen, with most of the T20 innings played here yielding 180+ runs. That being said, the pitch also presents a fair amount of speed and bounce for the quick bowlers.
