|Finished.188/9 (20) - 143/9 (20)|
Although they looked quite lost in their first match, Chennai Super Kings have come back strong against the Punjab Kings. Their batting didn’t seem too convincing, but their bowling shone brightly to give them their first win of the season. With the second-best run rate in the league at the time of writing, the Super Kings will look to stack up the points. The next obstacle in their way are Rajasthan Royals, who managed to edge out Delhi Capitals to start their own success story. However, they are lacking two key players in Jofra Archer - who will miss the first half of the season - and Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out of the IPL. They will have to find a replacement quickly if they are to have a good season, and whether they do or not, they need to win games. Before the two sides walk out onto the field, let’s take a look at how they stand.
Chennai Super Kings
Predicted XI vs Rajasthan Royals
MS Dhoni (c/wk), Narayan Jagadeesan, Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur, Moeen Ali, Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Cheteshwar Pujara, Deepak Chahar.
Chennai Super Kings team preview and form
While their bowling is looking solid, CSK’s batters must find form as soon as possible if the team is to reach the playoffs. Bowling first against Punjab Kings, Deepak Chahar bowled one of the spells of his career to take out virtually the entire PBKS top order with four strikes, and with support from Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, and Dwayne Bravo, CSK were able to chain their opponents to a borderline pathetic total. On the chase, however, things didn’t go as smoothly. Faf du Plessis’s 36 (33) was on the slow side, but given the low required rate, it was fine. Moeen Ali stood out with 46 off 31, and not much else was needed for them to reach their target with 6 wickets in hand - which was good because not much else seemed to be coming.
Chennai Super Kings key players vs Rajasthan Royals
Moeen Ali: Seemingly the only in-form batsman in CSK, the English all-rounder is punching above his usual weight.
Sam Curran: Another English all-rounder, Sam has the potential to score quicker than most of his teammates.
Deepak Chahar: After his stellar performance which we predicted successfully, he belongs here.
Dwayne Bravo: The West Indian speedster has been keeping things tight as usual.
Predicted XI vs Chennai Super Kings
Sanju Samson (c/wk), Jos Buttler, Jaydev Unadkat, Manan Vohra, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Mustafizur Rahman, Chris Morris, Chetan Sakariya, Shreyas Gopal, Shivam Dube.
Rajasthan Royals team preview and form
After narrowly succeeding against last year’s finalists thanks to the fruits of their financial splurging, the Royals have to manage their resources well and bag their next match. Choosing to field against the Capitals, Jaydev Unadkat made an excellent return to the IPL with 3-15 off his 4 overs, and with Mustafizur Rahman’s double-wicket haul and Chris Morris chipping in, RR were able to make sure their target wasn’t too difficult. Their chase was far from ceremonious, though, as they lost 5 wickets very quickly, and all seemed lost. However, David Miller’s 62 off 43 got them halfway there, and just when it looked like it was out of reach, Chris Morris came to the rescue with a blazing 36 off 18. RR won it by 3 wickets with 2 balls to go.
Rajasthan Royals key players vs Chennai Super Kings
Sanju Samson: The Royals’ young captain may have failed last match, but he’s extremely talented.
David Miller: RR’s saviour in the previous match needs to repeat his performance.
Mustafizur Rahman: After tasting blood in the previous match, the Fizz will look to exploit the Mumbai pitch.
Chris Morris: The South African all-rounder, like Mustafizur, will look to make the best of the circumstances.
Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals pitch report and weather conditions
After some big-score matches, the Wankhede Stadium seems to have slowed down a little, with batsmen having a bit of trouble. At the same time, fast bowlers are now having a better time than ever, with movement and bounce both giving them support. Expect the winners of the toss to want to field first, and the team batting first to aim for 170+.
As has been typical this IPL season, the weather will be on the hot side, but with some humidity and a cool breeze. Rain, it seems, won’t be making an appearance.
Can the Super Kings add a win to their existing triumph and move up the table? Or will the Royals get back to winning ways to overtake their opponents? Find out if our CSK vs RR predictions come true on Monday!
