Unlike the Test series, there was no fairy tale first match victory for the Zimbabweans in the T20 leg of the series. Afghanistan were not only victorious, but decisively so in both primary disciplines of the game.  Now the ‘home’ side will look to clean up the series with another win, while the visitors will try their best to upset the odds and even the series - however unlikely that may seem given their lack of firepower. Before the ball gets a chance to race away to the boundary, let’s take a look at the two teams.

Afghanistan

Predicted XI for 2nd T20 vs Zimbabwe

Asghar Afghan (c), Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Usman Ghani, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Fareed Ahmed, Amir Hamza, Naveen-ul-Haq.

Preview and form

As prepared and confident as the Afghans were, the events that precipitated on the field probably outdid their expectations. Batting first, it was wonder kid Rahmanullah Gurbaz who blazed his way to a powerful 87 off just 45, and with captain Asghar Afghan providing great backing with 55 off 38 and a cameo from a promoted-way-up-the-order Karim Janat, the Afghans set up a massive 198. On the defense, Rashid Khan’s 3-for stunted the progress of the opposition, but it was Karim Janat’s extremely economical dual haul that really sealed the deal, with Fareed Ahmad also taking two for good measure. In the end, Afghanistan won by a solid 48 runs.

Afghanistan key players for 2nd T20 vs Zimbabwe

Rahmanullah Gurbaz: You just can’t keep this young man down.

Mohammad Nabi: After a poor knock in place of what could have been a juicy cameo, Nabi will want to make amends.

Rashid Khan: The superstar spinner seems to be back to his imperious best.

Karim Janat: Potent and dangerous, Janat will be looking to increase his impact on this series.

Zimbabwe

Predicted XI for 2nd T20 vs Afghanistan

Sean Williams (c), Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza, Richmond Mutumbami (wk), Wesley Madhevere, Richard Ngarava, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Tarisai Musakanda, Blessing Muzarabani, Brandon Mavuta, Donald Tiripano.

Preview and form

When a team with so little experience starts picking on you, you can’t help but feel disheartened. Nevertheless, if there’s anything that Zimbabweans are not short on, it’s heart. It’s the skills that they need to improve. Bowling first, almost every bowler turned out to be expensive, and although Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani took two each, the wickets came way too late to make a tangible impact. A chase of 198 - one the Chevrons have never successfully pulled off - was always going to be near impossible, and none of the batsmen really looked like they were going to be able to do what was needed. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe did well for his 44, and there were a couple of other promising-looking starts from Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza, but in the end it just wasn’t anywhere near enough, and the visitors fell way short after their allotted overs.

Zimbabwe key players for 2nd T20 vs Afghanistan

Tinashe Kamunhukamwe: The man with a difficult-to-spell last name made an impact in the first match.

Sikandar Raza: Probably the only player in the Zimbabwe side who can go ballistic with the bat, Raza will have to play a bigger role.

Blessing Muzarabani: As expected, Muzarabani made an impact, but his impact will have to come earlier.

Donald Tiripano: Unsuccessful in the first match, Tiripano must do better to help bring glory to his country.

Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe 2nd T20 pitch report and weather conditions

As has been seen time and time again, the pitch at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium caters to every cricket player out there - somewhat. Expect first innings scores of 170+ to be a good bet.

Winter and spring weather in Abu Dhabi is probably the most consistent of any place in the world, with sunny skies, no rain, tolerable heat, and a cool breeze blowing.
