Just when the Karachi Kings were starting to think that they might easily make the playoffs this season, along came the Lahore Qalandars to put doubt on their minds and a loss on their record. With 2 wins and 2 losses, the Kings are currently in third place, but could be overtaken by Islamabad United should the latter win against the Quetta Gladiators tonight. Even if that doesn’t happen, the Kings have to worry about their next match, which is against the Peshawar Zalmi. Leading the league at the time of writing, the Zalmi have been looking great on the field, and will certainly pose problems for the Kings as they work to keep - and perhaps extend - their lead at the top. Before these two teams lock horns, let’s take a look at what they’ve been up to.

Karachi Kings

Predicted XI against Peshawar Zalmi

Imad Wasim (c), Sharjeel Khan, Babar Azam, Colin Ingram, Daniel Christian, Joe Clarke (wk), Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Ilyas, Mohammad Amir, Waqas Maqsood, Arshad Iqbal.

Preview and form

Although they won the all-important final against the Qalandars last year, they couldn’t seal the deal in this year’s first league encounter between the two. Batting first, Sharjeel Khan’s 64 off 39 got the team off to a good start, and with Mohammad Nabi’s 57 (35) and a nice 27-run cameo by Daniel Christian, they got to a strong 186 - a target which could have been much bigger had it not been for some excellent death bowling - and some thrown wickets. However, their defense turned out to be inadequate. Mohammad Amir was great initially - taking a wicket and bowling a maiden - but he was taken for quite a few runs in his last spell. No other bowler could make a big enough impact despite a wicket each from Waqas Maqsood and Daniel Christian, and the Kings ended up losing by 6 wickets with 4 deliveries to go.

Karachi Kings key players against Peshawar Zalmi

Sharjeel Khan: Sharjeel has engineered some of the biggest wins for the Kings, and he’s likely to do the same again.

Daniel Christian: We tip the Sydney man to go on a rampage against the Zalmi.

Mohammad Nabi: After his excellent turn with the bat, Nabi is likely to show his skills with the ball.

Mohammad Amir: Old school magic never gets old.

Peshawar Zalmi

Predicted XI against Karachi Kings

Wahab Riaz (c), Kamran Akmal (wk), Imam-ul-Haq, Haider Ali, Shoaib Malik, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Sherfane Rutherford, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Saqib Mahmood, Amad Butt, Mohammad Imran.

Preview and form

Considering how most of the PSL matches have gone so far, the battle between Peshawar and Islamabad was a marked departure from the norm. Bowling first, the Zalmi ate through the United lineup. Wahab Riaz took 4 from 4, while Saqib Mahmood picked up 3 off of just 2.1 overs to cripple United and eventually bowl them out for just 118 in the 18th over. While most chases have been fiery, the Zalmi took their time, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s 46 from 46, Shoaib Malik’s 29 from 30, and Haider Ali’s blistering 36 from 18 brought them a much-desired 6-wicket victory from the same 17.1 overs they had bowled out their opposition in.

Peshawar Zalmi key players against Karachi Kings

Tom Kohler-Cadmore: Kohler-Cadmore has been making quite the mark in limited overs formats as of late.

Haider Ali: After helping his team to victory more than once, Haider can be counted on for some more solid knocks.

Wahab Riaz: Screaming back into form with a quad haul, all eyes will be on Wahab when he bends his back for more.

Saqib Mahboob: The Englishman continues to impress during his PSL stint this year.

Karachi Kings vs Peshawar Zalmi pitch report and weather conditions

The pitch at the National Stadium in Karachi has seen 11 out of 11 chases be successful, fast bowlers do better than spinners, and batsmen hit them big. No score below 200 is safe from a chase, so it is simply better for the winner of the toss to bowl first.

The weather in Karachi will be quite pleasant, with the heat dwindling as the sun retreats. There will be some strong winds during the match that may cause high catches to deviate, but it shouldn’t be that bothersome if the ball has some legs on it. Other than that, pretty great conditions for cricket.
