Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

It was an eventful day in the wealthy city of Abu Dhabi, and the beauty we’re talking about is the wealth of cricket going down at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Now, however, comes arguably the least interesting match in any competition that features such an engagement. The two teams that were knocked out, the Qalandars and Team Abu Dhabi, are about to fight it out for the 3rd prize. The Qalandars’ two losses were enough to send them crashing out of the tournament, while Team Abu Dhabi went through four defeats to arrive at the same fate. That being said, the latter did beat the Qalandars, on one hand they are strong, and on the other hand the Qalandars would like nothing better than to take a bit of revenge. Before this grudge match begins, let’s take a look at the two sides.

Qalandars

Predicted XI

Sohail Akhtar (c), Ahmed Daniyal, Khurshid Anwar, Sultan Ahmed, Fayyaz Ahmed, Ben Dunk (wk), Chris Jordan, Sharjeel Khan, Samit Patel, Shahid Afridi, Sultan Ahmed.

Preview and form

Just 48 hours ago, the Qalandars were unbeaten and looking like the strongest team in the competition, and now they’re out of the running for first place and about to compete for third. In their last match, they were facing off in the Eliminator against Team Abu Dhabi, and their batting failed completely and comprehensively, with only Shahid Afridi getting a remotely respectable 24, and the rest just flopping miserably to see the team flop lazily to 83. While their bowling was slightly better, with Sultan Ahmed picking up two wickets and Chris Jordan and Ahmed Daniyal both keeping things economical and striking once each, one suspects the economical aspect came as a result of the low target. Either way, they lost by 6 wickets with 8 deliveries to go.

Key players

Sharjeel Khan: After a miserable innings in the last game, Sharjeel will be intent on making some amends.

Ben Dunk: A golden duck is hardly the way Dunk will want to leave this tournament, so expect amends from him, too.

Shahid Afridi: After showing some skills with the bat, Afridi will want to pick up some more wickets before he leaves Abu Dhabi.

Ahmed Daniyal: This young man has been a revelation, and he’ll want a few more scalps under his already heavy belt before he’s done.

Team Abu Dhabi

Predicted XI

Luke Wright (c), Kushal Malla, Leonardo Julien (wk), Obed McCoy, Tom Helm, Rohan Mustafa, Usman Shinwari, Naveen-ul-Haq, Ben Duckett, Chris Gayle, Najibullah Zadran, Paul Stirling.

Preview and form

After they beat the Qalandars in the first Eliminator, it looked as though Team Abu Dhabi might just have it in them to be true title contenders, but the Northern Warriors, who had been beaten down to the second Eliminator by the Delhi Bulls, were there to put a swift end to any such dreams. TAD batted first, and sadly Paul Stirling’s 48 was the only notable score as the team could only get an average 114. As it turned out, average wasn’t good enough, because despite 3 of the bowlers picking up wickets, it was a pretty lackluster bowling performance by the team, and they ended up losing by 7 wickets with 2 deliveries remaining. This was especially disappointing because in the previous game, it was their bowlers who got them their victory.

Key players

Chris Gayle: Let’s hope we get to see Gayle being Gayle one more time.

Paul Stirling: After his effort went unrewarded, Stirling will look to rack up the runs with no pressure involved.

Naveen-ul-Haq: Just another day of taking wickets for the Afghan quick.

Obed McCoy: McCoy will most likely get a call from the West Indian cricket board before long, because he’s pretty damn good.

Qalandars vs Team Abu Dhabi weather conditions and pitch report

As usual, the weather in Abu Dhabi will be absolutely idyllic for all sorts of cricket-related activities. It’s almost as though the organizers bought good weather from mother nature.

Speaking of buying elemental aid, the pitch is a thing of beauty with all kinds of cricket supported. Fast bowlers, spin bowlers, batsmen, you name it.
