As luck would have it, this year’s BBL table is shaping up in almost exactly the same way as last year’s IPL table did, with one team far behind, one team some way ahead, and the middle 6 teams fighting tooth and nail to confirm playoff spots. The Sydney Thunder probably didn’t think they would find themselves in such a position, having been one point behind the leaders even a week ago, but a loss against the same now sees them within touching distance of other teams, and if they lose this next match and the Bash Boost point that comes with it, they might slip out of the top two for the first time in many weeks. The team that can render such a fate upon them is the Hobart Hurricanes. Currently sitting all the way down in seventh, when you look at the table you have to feel that the Hurricanes have gotten the worse end of the Bash Boost stick, claiming only 4 of the 10 points they could have. Compare that to the 8 taken by the Melbourne Stars, and you can understand their frustration. There’s a lot of reshuffling that can happen on the table depending on the result of this match, and before it begins, let’s check out the teams.

Sydney Thunder predicted XI, preview, form, and key players for this match

Predicted XI: Callum Ferguson (c), Alex Ross, Ben Cutting, Daniel Sams, Alex Hales, Sam Billings (wk), Usman Khawaja, Adam Milne, Arjun Nair, Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha.

For any Sydney Thunder fan, watching the Sixers pull ahead must have been difficult. It’s not like they can’t catch up, but it will take some really poor performances on the Sixers’ part to do so. In their last match, the Thunder were batting first against the Sixers, and although Alex Hales played very well for his 54, wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Newly-crowned all-rounder Daniel Sams then came to the rescue with a strong 50 to get his team to a respectable 166. After rain reduced that to 129 off 14 overs, it was always going to be tougher to defend. The same Sams managed to pick up two wickets, but despite downing 5 in total, the Thunder ended up losing by 5 wickets with 8 balls to go.

ST Key players

  • Alex Hales: Hales’ creativity and power make him a dangerous player to have in any lineup.

  • Sam Billings: The English keeper hasn’t done much this season apart from his lone big innings, but he definitely has the potential to.

  • Tanveer Sangha: As he proved in the last game, Sangha can be a nuisance on the Manuka Oval pitch.

  • Arjun Nair: After Jonathan Cook was smacked around for 23 off his only over in the last game, we think Nair will be taking his place in the XI, and making the best of the same pitch.

Hobart Hurricanes predicted XI, preview, form, and key players for this match

Predicted XI: Peter Handscomb (c), Scott Boland, Nathan Ellis, Sandeep Lamichhane, Ben McDermott (wk), Riley Meredith, D’Arcy Short, Dawid Malan, Johan Botha, Colin Ingram, Tim David.

It’s been a roller coaster of a season so far for the Hurricanes, who currently stand at a miserable 7th position. The good news is, they’re still well within reach of greener pastures, and they must act now if they are to get there. In their last match, they batted first against the Perth Scorchers, and although D’Arcy Short made 54, he, like everyone else, was way too slow. Only Tim David scored runs with urgency, but he could make only 31 as the Hurricanes finished on a subpar 139. On the defense, almost all the bowlers were useless in causing trouble for the batsmen. Scott Boland took the only wicket and bowled economically, but the Hurricanes still lost by 9 wickets with 22 deliveries to go.

HH Key players

  • Ben McDermott: Still one of the contenders for the Orange Cap, McDermott is perhaps the Hurricanes’ best bet at qualifying.

  • Peter Handscomb: After many slow and unimpressive innings, Handscomb needs to step his game up and lead by example.

  • D’Arcy Short: It’s not just the batsman Short that can be good, but his spin will be an important factor in Canberra.

  • Scott Boland: The consistent quick will need to put his heart and soul into his bowling if his team are to win this match.

ST vs HH weather and pitch conditions

With sunny skies, cool temperatures, and little chance of rain, it should be a pleasant day for cricket in the Australian capital. The only thing to worry about might be the wind where high catches are concerned.

As has been evident in recent matches, the Manuka Oval pitch has plenty in it for bowlers, with some good for batsmen as well. Expect spinners to be especially effective, and scores of 160+ to be good to defend.
