What was supposed to be the battle between two relative minnows has turned into a fight between top and bottom. Minister Rajshahi is the surprise team of the tournament with wins over Khulna and Dhaka, while Fortune Barishal sadly threw their own chance for a win. Now, Rajshahi will want to take advantage of Barishal’s evident weaknesses to stay on top, while the latter tries to find vulnerabilities in Rajshahi’s game to exploit on their way to an important first win. With plenty on the line, both teams will be playing their hearts out, and before the fight begins, let’s take a look at the two contestants.
The de facto underdogs of the tournament, Fortune Barishal were extremely close to having a dream start to the campaign with a win over its mightiest team on paper when poor captaincy lost them the chance. After piling up a modest 152 (Parvez Hossain Emon 51, Towhid Hridoy 27) when asked to bat first, they set about dismantling a seemingly rock-solid batting lineup. Getting Khulna down to 36-4, they looked to be in pole position right until the last over, when Ariful Haque went ham against Mehidy Hasan Miraz after the latter was inexplicably trusted to bowl the last over as an off spinner against an in-form right-handed batsman. Barishal will have to do better if they want to have hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.
If you’re a Minister Rajshahi fan, chances are you’re very happy right now. Understrength on paper, the team is proving to be quite the powerhouse with two giants slain in two matches. In their last match, they restricted Gemcon Khulna to a subpar 146 after Mahmudullah and the rest of the top order failed to fire for the second match in a row. Only 6 wickets fell, but the economical bowling took its toll on the score. In reply, Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front with 55 off 34, and a few other cameos sealed the deal for his team. If they can keep up such performances, they will be a force to be reckoned with.Â
With the experience he has, Tamim Iqbal will probably learn from his mistake in the first game. Expect him and Parvez Hossain Emon to bat well, while Taskin Ahmed and Sumon Khan excel with the ball.
Minister Rajshahi is doing well, and as long as they don’t get complacent, they can win this. Expect Mahadi Hasan to bowl and bat superbly, while Arafat Sunny and Najmul Hossain Shanto support him in their respective departments.
Can Barishal beat Rajshahi to give the contest an early twist? Or will Rajshahi continue their winning streak? Find out on Saturday!
