England vs Australia 2nd ODI Match Prediction and Preview

13.09.2020, 17:30 IST
Old Trafford Cricket Ground (Manchester)
Very few sports can boast a rivalry that is almost as old as the sport itself. What makes it even more special is that the two teams have been swapping supremacy throughout, and Friday’s match was one such example. After losing the T20 series 2-1, Australia came back strong to claim the first ODI by 19 runs. Despite a couple of exceptional performances, England were bested by the less special but more numerous innings by the Australian batsmen. Before the teams meet again on Sunday, let’s discuss the match that took place, and the match that will.

1st ODI Analysis and Takeaways

Getting the toss in their favour and choosing to field first, England were very happy to pick up regular wickets and get Australia in a precarious position at 123 for 5, but a fantastic partnership between veterans Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell saw them rise up to a strong score of 294. Try as Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and company might, they all gave away almost a run-a-ball.

On England’s turn out, they also looked to crumble quickly when they were reduced to 57 for 4, but a solid stand between Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings kept them in contention. After Evans was dismissed, though, no one else could give Billings the support he deserved, and the team could only get to 275 after the allotted overs. Overall, other than Bairstow and Billings’ innings, only Eoin Morgan made it into the 20s, with Woakes coming next highest with 10. Zampa and Hazlewood were the picks of the Australian bowlers, but it was Hazlewood who got Man of the Match for his incredible economy rate of 2.6 in a game where the second-lowest was Starc’s 4.7.

While Australia’s top order needs some brushing up, England have much bigger problems on their hands. The inconsistency that has been plaguing them since cricket resumed has been a thorn in their side, and could lead to problems in future major tournaments. It’s not rare in cricket for one or two people to carry an inning, but the fact that this has become a regular feature, and that others just seem to crumble completely, is a big worry for England. Additionally, trying out part-time bowlers in hopes of breaking a partnership is an idea they might want to look into.

ENG vs AUS 2nd ODI Match Prediction

Losing a series against Australia on home soil would be a sure embarrassment for England, so they will have their claws out to level the series. Expect Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow to open solidly, while Mark Wood and Adil Rashid strike with the ball.

In the same vein, Australia would love nothing more than to beat England in England. Expect David Warner and Marcus Stoinis to lead the charge with the bat, while Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc star with the ball.
